otoplasty
Otoplasty, or ear surgery can set prominent ears back closer to the head, reduce
the size of large ears, or recontour ears with an asymmetrical shape. Prominent
ears occur when the natural folds of the ear do not form properly or when there
is a deep bowl in the lower part of the ear.
Otoplasty is typically performed on children between ages 5 and 8, and it is often
covered by insurance. In some cases, adults will have otoplasty for cosmetic purposes.
The surgery takes about two hours, although complicated procedures may take longer.
This is an outpatient procedure and is done under general anesthesia. In one week,
most patients may return to work or school and can exercise within two weeks. There
are a few different techniques and Dr. Liszka can discuss which one is right for
you.
